Microsoft rolls out end-to-end encryption for Skype Insider conversations

Skype is now adding support for end-to-end encrypted messaging with Signal's help.

Skype does already offer some degree of encryption that protects the communication channel itself. To that end, Skype is rolling out end-to-end encryption within Private Conversations using Signal Protocol. Interestingly, this feature is now unsupported on the UWP version of Skype, though Microsoft has mentioned that support for the UWP client can be expected soon.

Tap or click the + icon. It's worth mentioning that if you're planning to test this feature, you will only be able to start private chats with other individuals who have the same Insider build. You will be taken to a new chat with them. This invitation is valid for 7 days. This is an additional layer of security for conversations and is only available for one-on-one chats.

After you're done talking, you can delete the Private Conversation if you believe it's not worth keeping. Thus, Skype's implementation is similar to what Facebook Messenger uses, which has dedicated Secret Conversations you can set up for this objective. Starting today, Skype is testing out a new feature called Private Conversations that delivers end-to-end encryption to your chats.

Private conversations should roll out to non-Insiders in the coming weeks, though it's not clear yet when it will be available in the Skype UWP app. Up next, we'd like to improve the UX around the invite to join a private conversation and bring the experience to the UWP client. Now these conversations are limited to two people at a time. You can not edit a message or forward a file.

To be clear, Skype uses standard encryption for audio and video calls, and texts and file transfers.
