Mohamed Salah named 2017 African player of the year

Salah won ahead of Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane of Senegal and Borussia Dortmund and Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the other finalists at the Confederation of African Football awards ceremony in Accra, Ghana.

On the worldwide stage he was hugely instrumental in both Egypt's Africa Cup of Nations success - the North African team made it to the final - and also World Cup qualification for the Pharaohs.

After 26 appearances for the Reds in all competitions, Salah has scored 23 goals and registered eight assists.

He polled 625 points, against 507 from Mane whilst Aubameyang finished a distant third with 311 points.

Taking home the women's national team of the year award was South Africa's senior side.

"I am so happy to be here and to make sure I win the African player of the year award for my country, Egypt", says Salah. "I am delighted with our accomplishments this year and I am confident that we do well in the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation", states Salah. "This award is a big award for me ... it's a special moment for me in my career", Salah added.

Last year Leicester's Algerian ace Riyad Mahrez won the honor, and prior to that Manchester City's Ivorian Yaya Touré was named player of the year for four successive years, from 2011 to 2014.

CAF Executive Committee member, Ahmed Yahya, who doubles as president of the Mauritania Football Federation was named Football Leader of the Year.

Former Ghana player Ibrahim Sunday, a member of the Asante Kotoko squad that won the African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1970 was decorated with the Legend award.
