Mumbai Kamala Mills Fire: Two managers of '1 Above' pub arrested

Mumbai mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar had said an inquiry had been ordered and strict action would be taken against errant officials.

Fourteen people were killed after a devastating fire swept through One Above, a pub in the Kamala Mills compound, a little after midnight on December 29. S. Jayakumar, additional commissioner of police (central region) said, "We have received complaint from the BMC officials after they found violation of the MRTP Act".

The officers failed to notice and take action against the pubs and restaurant flouting the norms. Entire premises or portions of 30 hotels were sealed.

A day after a massive fire in Kamala Mills Complex left 14 people dead, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun demolishing the illegal structures in the area.

Since most hotels and restaurants have sold tickets and invested in New Year events, it is not possible to cancel them, he said. In a statement, it also claimed the fire started from "quarters" adjoining the restaurant and its emergency exit was used by customers from the adjoining Mojo's Bistro too.

"Just like in the nallah and road fix scam, where we found out who is the corrupt contractor, and who is the corrupt engineer and broke their backs, we will do the same here", Mehta said. "He is also equally responsible for letting this happen", he said.

1 Above has said it had all the necessary approvals and safety norms in place. The closest one to 1 Above was practically invisible and blocked due to the fire, according to fire officers.

Their cousin Viral Chheda said the two men were seated near the exit and managed to escape, but went back in after realising their aunt was missing.

Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam on Saturday however termed the ongoing demolitions as "a mere eyewash" in view of the public anger and demanded the suspension of the BMC commissioner for the lapses over which he is presiding.

He said the fire brigade later helped the police team break a locked door and get some of the people out.
