NBC Olympics to Deliver 50 Hours of Winter Olympics VR Coverage

10:45am

Olympics plans to stream more than 50 hours of live virtual reality video content from the 2018 Winter Olympics, to be held in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Of the six funded Olympic sports, three were challenged with delivering medals: curling (one to two), ski and snowboard (two to three) and short-track speed skating (one to two).

Break out the VR headsets and fire up the virtual reality app. Once in the VR environment, they can change their vantage points, listen to natural sound captured at each camera location, look at real-time stats and leaderboards, and view post-event results.

Joining the figure skaters in the Olympic torch relay in the morning ahead of next month's Pyeongchang Games was Japan Sports Agency chief and retired swimmer Daichi Suzuki, who won the men's 100-meter backstroke at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

"The Olympics have always been an opportunity to showcase emerging media technology", said Gary Zenkel, president, NBC Olympics in a statement. "We are enabling a truly immersive experience, where fans get closer to the action than ever before allowing them feel like they are sitting in the stands for a front and center view of history being made".

In addition to the live VR events, NBC and Intel will be producing behind-the-scenes VR content prior to the start of the games on February 9.

The British bobsledder Bruce Tasker will miss the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang after having a minor stroke on 4 January.

Moreover, prime-time viewership for the 18-49 year-old age group at the 2016 Olympic Games was 25% lower compared with the Olympics four years earlier, according to Bloomberg. No word yet on whether NBC's Olympics coverage in VR will feature VR advertising as well.
