NFL Investigating Raiders' Possible Rooney Rule Violation After Jon Gruden Hire

The Raiders were scheduled to interview at least six more offensive line coaches making the hiring of former Oakland head coach and Seahawks assistant head coach/OL coach Tom Cable a bit surprising for some.

Tom Cable's on the way, albeit in a lesser role.

Since leaving the Raiders, Cable has spent seven seasons in Seattle where he coached the Seahawks' offensive line, a unit that came under heavy scrutiny for its inability to protect quarterback Russell Wilson over the last several years.

The NFL said Thursday it will investigate whether the Oakland Raiders violated the "Rooney Rule" when they hired Jon Gruden as coach. The Raiders did interview two minorities, Bobby Johnson, the Raiders former tight ends coach, and Tee Martin, the former offensive coordinator at USC.

Gruden succeeded Jack Del Rio, who was sacked following a season-ending loss to the Los Angeles Chargers that capped a disappointing 6-10 campaign for the Raiders.

Cable's tenure included allegations of physical abuse. One of Cable's accusers sued Cable and named the Raiders as a co-defendant.

In January 2011, Davis cited the latter situation when discussing Cable's departure.

Cable had been the Seahawks' offensive line coach and assistant head coach from 2011 until Wednesday, when he was sacked. Cable's familiarity with Lynch might indicate that Lynch will be retained. While rumors swirled, and sports personalities debated the future of the Silver and Black, the news became official Tuesday afternoon when the Raiders hosted Gruden's introductory press conference at the team's Alameda, Calif., practice facility. Gruden has served as an ESPN commentator for Monday Night Football during the last nine years, although he previously coached the Raiders (1998-2001) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2002-08), amassing a 95-81 record and winning a Super Bowl.
