Packers expected to hire Mike Pettine as defensive coordinator

The Green Bay Packers settled on a successor to defensive coordinator Dom Capers with the hiring of former Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Tuesday night. He went 10-22 in his two seasons in Cleveland.

The Green Bay Packers filled both of their vacant coordinator positions quickly. He worked this season as a consultant for the Seahawks. Pettine's defensive units finished in the top 10 in total defense in all five of those years.

Pettine was the Browns' head coach for two years before he was sacked after compiling a 10-22 record.

That should end soon as they hire a guy who loves to bring pressure and who's defenses regularly finish in the top ten. Pettine served as the defensive coordinator for the New York Jets from 2009 through 2012 and the Buffalo Bills in 2013 and was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2014 and 2015. Prior to that, however, Pettine was a successful defensive coordinator.

The Packers still have an opening for a defensive line coach and quarterbacks coach. He hired Joe Philbin, the former coach, to rejoin his staff likely as offensive coordinator to replace Edgar Bennett, who will not return.

Apart from Pettine, the Packers also interviewed three of Capers' assistants - linebackers coach Winston Moss, cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt and safeties coach Darren Perry - for the job.
