Reporter Shouts 'Are You Racist?' at Trump after MLK Jr. Proclaimation

The President's comments come after he held on-camera bipartisan talks at the White House last week in which he appeared open to making a deal with both Republicans and Democrats.

Asked on Sunday whether his inflammatory remarks made it harder to get a DACA deal, Trump said: "Did you see what various senators in the room say about my comments?"

"I think there are two sides to take, one obviously from an worldwide perspective that it's just insulting and particularly when you think of what Haitians and Haiti have gone through and the need for our assistance", he observed.

He said US embassy officials also responded to concerns about Trump's comments by saying: "The US deeply respects the people of Africa and the people of SA‚ and values its partnerships with them". Some of them are his friends, and I can hear them now, telling me: 'Donald didn't mean that, ' 'Donald isn't a racist, ' 'I think it was taken out of context.'.

In effect the United States embassy in Pretoria and the South African government have clearly just agreed to detour around the embarrassing occupant of the White House and to continue without him.

Donald Trump's ex-wife, Ivana Trump, has said the President may occasionally say "silly" things but he's "definitely not racist".

The U.S. president reportedly made the comment during a meeting with congressional leaders in the Oval Office on Thursday.

The South African government has not as yet heeded the call, remaining mum on the matter, although the ANC and the DA have denounced the comment.

Ghana, located in west Africa, is one of the region's most politically stable countries and has long enjoyed friendly relations with the United States.

The president, according to the reports, also said the United States should accept more immigrants from places like Norway. On Friday, he denied using that language.

Trump preceded that message with a tweet that simply said: "America First!"

The President has drawn sharp criticism since he was reported to have called African countries "shitholes" while discussing immigration with lawmakers Thursday.

The words uttered by Trump are perhaps more brutal, but painfully consistent with the many other words he has spoken about people of color, immigrants, refugees, and Muslims.

Durbin, he added, "has a history of misrepresenting what happens in White House meetings, though, so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised by that".
