Russia: US Call for UN Meeting on Iran "Destructive"

Handle with care

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said this week that Washington was seeking emergency sessions on Iran at the United Nations in NY and at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Russian Federation has criticized the U.S. push for Iran to be discussed at the UNSC and it remained unclear if other council members would try to block the meeting.

Ryabkov was responding to US Vice President Mike Pence who this week said Washington will "not remain silent on Iran" and called for a replacement to the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement. The US had called for the meeting on Tuesday, but council members could insist on a vote before taking up the topic, and it would take nine of the 15 votes to go forward.

US Ambassador Nikki Haley said earlier this week that she would be seeking a meeting of the top United Nations body to show support for demonstrators. She added that it would be "telling if any country tries to deny the Security Council from even having this discussion".

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert had suggested the USA government could impose sanctions against Iranian officials who repress peaceful protests.

The Commerce Ministry in China, North Korea's lone major ally, also said it will continue to fully implement United Nations sanctions on North Korea.

North Korea regularly threatens to destroy the United States, South Korea and Japan and tested its most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile in November, which it said was capable of delivering a warhead anywhere in the United States. Since the demonstrations began six days back, at least 21 people have been killed - including a police officer - while hundreds more have reportedly been detained.

Iran stages pro-government rallies after days of unrest
The official said the United States would also seek condemnation of Iran at The United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. Vice President Mike Pence said Wednesday the USA wants an agreement lasting longer.

Iran's prosecutor general Mohammad Jafar Montazeri has said an American CIA official was the "main designer" of the demonstrations. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson last month by Myanmar's government against the Asian nation's Rohingya Muslim minority amounted to "ethnic cleansing."Haley's Christmas Eve announcement on cuts to the UN budget for 2018-2019 came days after the US in years at the UN Security Council". The CIA declined to comment.

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his support for protesters who have been staging rallies across Iran over the past week against the country's government.

A wave of protests about Iran's weakening economy swept the Iranian capital of Tehran over the weekend, the largest protest against the Islamic Republic's clerical government since the disputed 2009 presidential election.

"We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked", Haley said in a. Haley said the USA had negotiated a $285 million reduction of the United Nations budget for 2018-2019 compared to the budget for 2016-2017. "All freedom-loving people must stand with their cause".

Not all council members see a need to weigh in.

Graham echoed Trump's support for the protesters.

After taking office a year ago, Mr Trump refused this past fall to certify Iran's compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal that lifted some sanctions in return for Iran curbing its nuclear programme.
