SpaceX Falcon Heavy towers over historic Apollo launchpad

Space Flight Insider

SpaceX celebrated getting its rocket upright with an impressive drone's eye view video of the massive spacecraft, along with brand new images captured of the Falcon Heavy aiming skyward on the pad. It was lowered and returned to its hangar the following day.

The Falcon Heavy has been raised on its Cape Canaveral launchpad for the first time ahead of engine tests expected within days.

"Test flights of new rockets usually contain mass simulators in the form of concrete or steel blocks", Elon Musk wrote in Instagram just before Christmas. That static fire test is not expected to take place until after the Falcon 9 launch of a classified payload codenamed "Zuma" from nearby Space Launch Complex 40.

If that demonstration mission is a success, SpaceX has at least two more Falcon Heavy launches planned for 2018, of the Arabsat 6A communications satellite and the Space Test Program 2 mission for the U.S. Air Force, although the timing of those missions is uncertain.

Since this is the first ever launch SpaceX has attempted using its Falcon Heavy, however, there's a significant chance that not everything will go to plan.

It is expected to blast off soon after on an unmanned mission with a unique payload - Elon Musk's cherry red Tesla roadster auto, which will be launched toward Mars.

Now, the company has released a space porn video showcasing the rocket's three Falcon 9 cores and 27 engines, which create 5 million pounds of hot thrust action upon takeoff.

Before a May 1 launch of a National Reconnaissance Office satellite, government satellites were nearly exclusively sent into space aboard rockets built by United Launch Alliance, a Boeing-

Elon Musk is ready for the SpaceX crew to have a very productive 2018.

Musk, though, has lowered expectations for the first Falcon Heavy launch, something he also did in his Instagram post. Guaranteed to be exciting, one way or another, ' Musk originally posted.

SpaceX has been working on the Falcon Heavy rocket for years, and announced this fall that work to build an even bigger rocket that will be capable of transporting humans to Mars was already underway.
