Trump dossier author's blackmail concerns

Later in the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump's opponent Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Committee paid Fusion GPS through a law firm for some of the research that resulted in the dossier.

Christopher Steele told the political research firm that hired him, Fusion GPS, that what he uncovered from Russian sources was serious enough to bring to the attention of USA law enforcement authorities, according to a transcript released on Tuesday.

U.S. Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein on Tuesday released testimony from the founder of the Fusion GPS firm that researched President Donald Trump's ties to Russian Federation and produced a dossier denounced by the White House. Dianne Feinstein of California.

Citing Republicans' attempt to discredit the dossier, Simpson had called for the release of the closed-door interviews he has done as part of congressional Russian Federation investigations, including his interview with the Judiciary committee. He likened the sense of responsibility he said Steele felt to the professional obligations that attorneys have in some cases to report a crime if they learn of one.

According to Simpson, Steele flew to Rome to meet an Federal Bureau of Investigation agent stationed there for his second debriefing before the November election.

Steele's dossier has come under intense scrutiny, with Republicans questioning whether the document spurred the FBI's investigation into Trump's presidential campaign. When asked why he was declining to answer, his attorney, Joshua Levy, said Simpson "wants to be very careful to protect his sources".

"My understanding was that they believed Chris at this point - that they believed Chris might be credible because they had other intelligence that indicated the same thing and one of those pieces of intelligence was a human source from inside the Trump organization", Simpson said. When they re-interviewed him in early October, agents made it clear, according to Simpson's testimony released Tuesday, that they believed some of what Steele had told them.

Trump has derided the dossier as a politically motivated hit job.

On Monday, two Democrats on the Judiciary committee, Rhode Island Sen.

Democrats on the committee said they were not consulted ahead of the Republicans' referral to the Department of Justice. Mr. Grassley last week rejected the firm's request to release the transcript, citing concerns that its release could taint the committee's ongoing investigations related to Russia's election meddling and the F.B.I.'s response. "Her action undermines the integrity of the committee's oversight work and jeopardizes its ability to secure candid voluntary testimony relating to the independent recollection of future witnesses, " said the spokesman, Taylor Foy.

A source close to Fusion GPS, however, told NBC that the Trump-team source did not exist.

"The innuendo and misinformation circulating about the transcript are part of a deeply troubling effort to undermine the investigation into potential collusion and obstruction of justice", said Dianne Feinstein, who is the senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Simpson has testified for more than 20 hours before three congressional committees regarding his firm's role in commissioning the report.

Simpson, a former journalist who co-founded Fusion GPS, denied strongly in the interview that the dossier, which contains some salacious allegations, was phony.
