Trump questions taking immigrants from 'shithole countries'

When discussing African countries, Trump reportedly said: "Why do we want these people from all these sh*thole countries here?" And during a Tuesday meeting Trump hosted in the Cabinet Room with lawmakers from both parties, Durbin and other Democrats said they could support a compromise that included border security. Trump asked the lawmakers present at the Oval Office meeting.

Last year, he removed protections from immigrants from Haiti.

This week the Trump administration announced that it was ending temporary legal protective status for 200,000 immigrants from El Salvador who have lived in the United States for almost two decades.

Senators from both parties have said that an agreement involving immigrants who entered the USA illegally as children and Trump's promised border wall had been brokered, while others said that it was not yet fully agreed.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, meanwhile, said he would like a "more detailed explanation" of Trump's comments.

Rep. Cedric Richmond of Louisiana, chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, said, "President Trump's comments are yet another confirmation of his racially insensitive and ignorant views".

White House Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah was quick with an explanation, which notably didn't contain a denial.

It follows a handful of inflammatory comments made by Mr Trump about other countries. The group agreed to also include provisions strengthening security - which for Trump means building parts of a wall along the border with Mexico - curbing immigrants' relatives from coming here and restricting the visa lottery.

Immigrants and supporters demonstrating during a rally in support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program outside Trump International Hotel in Washington DC in September.

The White House did not deny- or confirm- the remarks in a statement responding to the report, but said Trump was defending his immigration principles because he is an advocate for the American people.

A senior White House official, speaking on background to ABC News, acknowledged that the president "grew frustrated when the conversation turned to the issue of the visa lottery deal".

Many of the National Football League players who protested by taking a knee during the anthem did so to protest police brutality against black people. Trump's comments came after lawmakers floated restoring protections for people from El Salvador, Haiti and Africa, which his administration has stripped away recently. "We haven't quite gotten there, but we feel like we're close".

The group's proposal also did not fully end family unification, also known as "chain migration", and only delayed the ability of Dreamers to bring in some other family members, including their adult siblings. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) and Sen.

"The American people don't want that style of immigration reform", Cotton told reporters about the bipartisan senators' offer.
