Twitter Inc (TWTR) Unlikely To Benefit From Facebook's News Feed Overhaul

If Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg is honest in a recent post about gradually taking the media element out of "social media", he's striking a powerful blow for tech self-regulation, as well as preparing to pay a heavy price for the evolution of his vision.

Are People Really Going To Spend Less Time on Facebook? "It's not good for the users of Facebook".

Simply putting budget behind your posts won't be enough to get into the News Feed and in front of the right people. That's the spoils of outcompeting traditional media for the role of the top news purveyor to the U.S. public - Facebook's most important audience in monetisation terms. The company's risk factor legalese states: "Similarly, from time to time we update our News Feed ranking algorithm to deliver the most relevant and meaningful content to our users, which may adversely affect the distribution of content of publishers, marketers, and developers, and could reduce their incentive to invest in their efforts on Facebook".

Now it is determined to turn over a new leaf. The company's stock by 4.5 percent upon the announcement of its newsfeed changes, personally shaving $3.3 billion off Mark Zuckerberg's personal net worth.

Make sure your preferences are switched to "On" for Notifications. His statement represented an acknowledgement, however oblique, that the opposite might be true.

Facebook is a company that has always been defined by ruthless ambition.

Choose the pages you'd like to see first in your News Feed.

The changes announced Thursday look like a fervent wish to return to 2010.

That's because Facebook is being "far more explicit" in its wording about what sorts of posts will diminish.

But Facebook now serves as the interface for the most fundamental pillars of our society. Zuckerberg already signaled this would happen late a year ago, when he said the company's planned investments in preventing abuse would hurt profitability.

The company has also partnered with fact-checking organizations, working to prevent hoaxes from spreading. In many ways the company is seeking to play a greater role in public affairs than ever before.

The feature, which places news stories in a standalone feed called Explore, is being tested in countries like Slovakia, Sri Lanka, Bolivia, Serbia and Guatemala. Facebook-owned WhatsApp has no news feed, and yet hoaxes and propaganda still run rampant. Detaching conversations from article links won't necessarily make them more accurate, productive, or even more "meaningful".

So arguably the company can afford to shift its focus a bit away from quarterly profit gains and metrics like "user engagement" that get advertisers salivating. Maybe, maybe not. But Facebook's goal is to make people happier using the site - not to expose them to opposing views.

Roger McNamee has been one of the earliest investors in Facebook and is apparently one of Zuckerberg's former mentors, Business Insider reports. At least for a while. The decade-long project to expand around the world has brought about consequences with no easy solutions. If you're prone to anxiety, insecurity or already unhappy with your life, then seeing other people having fun could deepen your feelings of missing out or being left out.
