Two militants killed in ongoing Kokernag encounter

"Today morning a gunfight broke out in the forest area of Larnoo Kokernag here between security forces and militants" a police official posted in Anantnag told Xinhua.

Personnel of the Army's Rashtriya Rifles, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Special Operations Group of the state police surrounded Larnoo village in Anantnag following a tip about the presence of some militants.

"During the search operation, militants fired on security forces and tried to flee from the area".

The identities of the slain militants are being ascertained and combing operations are underway, officials said. The killed civilian has been identified as Khalid Ahmad Dar, son of Abdul Samad Dar, a resident of Khodweni.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police SP Pani confirmed the killing of the militant and of the civilian in Khodweni.

He was also involved in many anti-national and unlawful activities, the spokesperson said.

He said that till reports last came in, two of the hiding terrorists were neutralised by the security forces. A native of Kudwani, Wani had joined militancy in June 2017. The protesting youth reached the SKUAST campus in Khodweni, which houses the army, and started clashes with the government forces deployed there. One of the two terrorists killed was identified as Mohd Furhan Wani.

The youth was immediately taken to District Hospital Anantnag, where he succumbed. "He is stable", Kochak said.

Meanwhile, authorities blocked internet services in the southern district.
