Apple TV app gains promised News section first shown in September

Apple News Winter Olympics 2018

We were first given an inside look at this News section in September and Apple has finally delivered on its promise. The feature is similar to the Sports section launched previous year in which you can sift through a selection of news outlets to watch such as CNN, CNBC, Fox News, Cheddar, and Bloomberg. The deal enables Apple to add a new section in Apple News that's dedicated to the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics. The live feeds are immediately recognizable thanks to a "Live" flag on the video thumbnail. The section will also provide link to live streams and replays found in the NBC Sports app.

Both the News and the Sports sections were showcased alongside the unveiling of the Apple TV 4K and the two sections work to support each other. For users who don't have a particular news app installed, the TV app prompts for it to be installed from the App Store. However, Apple did say that certain clips from the different events will be available for direct viewing within the Apple News app. Those with an Apple TV have the benefit of using Siri to retrieve news content in the same way Alexa can on a newer Fire TV device.

The live programming additions come almost a year and a half after Apple originally launched its TV app, which aggregates TV and movies from multiple apps into one unified search platform available on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad.
