Bomber sentenced to 2 life terms for Manhattan attack

New York bomber sentenced to life in prison

A man who set off small bombs in two states, including a pressure cooker device that blasted shrapnel across a New York City block, was sentenced Tuesday to multiple terms of life in prison.

Afghan-born Ahmad Khan Rahimi, 30, told the court that he became radicalized after being "harassed" by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and "singled out" for his religion, but showed no remorse for inflicting the bloody injuries.

"One thing a life sentence does is to make sure you don't do it again", Berman said. A pipe bomb he planted in Seaside Park also exploded, though no injuries were reported. He was convicted on all eight counts.

Chilling surveillance videos played at Rahimi's trial showed pedestrians enjoying a temperate Saturday night before they recoiled in shock and ran for their lives when his pressure-cooker bomb blew up outside a home for the blind and disabled around 8 p.m. September 17, 2016.

Rahimi also allowed some inmates to view materials on his laptop or provided electronic copies as he spread "The Book of Jihad", bomb-making instructions and various issues of a propaganda magazine. He became a naturalized United States citizen in 2011.

A year earlier, in September 2016, Rahimi transported two improvised pressure-cooker bombs - similar to those used in the Boston marathon bombing in April 2013 - from New Jersey to NY, placing both in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, authorities said. "I was singled out", he said. The FBI took no action, he said.

"I was never discriminated for my religion until I started following it", he said.

Google: Ads Don't Ruin the Web, Site Owners Do (Premium)
Non-compliant publishers are expected to have their ads suspended for a period of 30 days. Put another way, in an ideal world, Chrome's ad blocker would not have any work to do.

He said consecutive life sentences would not "show the world justice".

Rahimi wasn't charged with terrorism, but his father, Mohammad Rahimi, said he contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation to warn that his son may have been radicalized and the agency informed him his son wasn't engaged in terrorist behavior.

"You have no remorse", she said before a silent courtroom. "The conclusion is inescapable that you remain extremely risky".

"Innocent people on a Saturday night, it is inexplicable that anybody would do that deliberately".

"As the evidence at trial demonstrated, the defendant was committed to waging his holy war against Americans years before he carried out his attack", prosecutors said of Rahimi according to Fox News. A Bangladeshi driver detonated a bomb in a subway passageway, wounding himself and three other people in December.

NY retains stringent security, which was drastically stepped up after the September 11, 2001 Al-Qaeda hijackings brought down the Twin Towers.
