British skater gives emotional interview after crashing out of Winter Olympics final

A distraught Elise Christie says a medal was "taken away" from her after she was "knocked over" in the final of the 500m short track speed skating at the Winter Olympics. Shen then toppled to the ice and crashed into the advertising boards in the Gangneung Ice Arena. "It's still nearly a week until my best distance, so that's a positive", the 27-year-old added.

"I've worked so hard for the 500 and it's been taken away from me", Christie told the BBC after the race.

"When there's five people in the final, it doesn't give you any benefit when someone gets a penalty". I got bumped in my semi-final and because it wasn't that quick, I started from lane four. "I know it's short track and I'm supposed to be prepared for this but it still hurts".

In the end Korean Choi Min-jeong was disqualified to the boos of home fans while Italy's Arianna Fontana took gold ahead of Dutch skater Yara van Kerkhof and Boutin.

Canada's Kim Boutin won the bronze medal.

Christie qualified for the race as fourth fastest after finishing second in her semi-final earlier on Tuesday.

But, after winning three gold medals at last year's world championships, she arrived in Pyeongchang as one of Team GB's leading hopes and lived up to that billing, twice setting a new Olympic record in Tuesday morning's qualification rounds. But it's not until next Thursday that she races in the 1000m - her main event.

Christie, 27, was in fourth position and pushing for a podium place but slipped off course after her hand appeared to be caught by a fellow skater.

"I just don't think I'll be taking much [sic] positives tonight". "Obviously none of us wanted it to be written this way but we come back on Saturday in her best event". "Right now I can't see living with this feeling".

Winner Fontana expressed some sympathy for Christie and said she expected the Briton to bounce back in her next event.

That process begins with an immediate return to the track to remind Christie of the qualities that propelled her to world championship gold a year ago in both the 1000m and 1500m.

Christie was not alone in her disappointment, with the result also leaving South Korea's Choi Minjeong in tears.

"I admire her for trying to win gold and everybody at home could see she tried everything to move up the field, so I'm disappointed for her". It wasn't down to Elise's own skating.

"We go back to some of the processes we put in place. I won't obsess over the results", she continued.

Hirscher has six world titles and 55 World Cup wins, but had just one Olympic medal from two prior Games, with slalom silver in 2014.
