Buhari congratulates new South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa

Ramaphosa, in brief remarks to parliament ahead of his first state of the nation address expected on Friday, said he would work hard "not to disappoint the people of South Africa". "I certainly don't think it would have happened if Zuma was still president of the ANC". "I think it's unfair". Zuma also angrily pointed out that the party had presented no evidence of wrongdoing, nor followed the proper constitutional procedure in forcing his ouster. He said there was no deadline for 75-year-old leader to reply, leaving open the possibility that the political crisis could drag on.

In dramatic late-night scenes, Ramaphosa and top ANC officials drove with a heavy police escort to Zuma's residence to again demand he resign - which Zuma flatly refused.

Late in the afternoon, Zuma gave an angry and rambling TV interview to justify his refusal to obey his own party's order to step down.

When the ANC began negotiations with the then-ruling National Party (NP) to end apartheid and move towards non-racial elections, Ramaphosa helped lead the team carrying out the ANC's side of the talks.

Mr Ramaphosa was elected ANC head in December and will be president until elections next year.

Ramaphosa, 65, must now work to revive the economy and crack down on what he has admitted is rampant government corruption if he is to fix the party's tarnished reputation before a tricky general election next year.

The ANC Women's League also said after Zuma, the party should continue with its socio-economic transformation agenda of the country to redress the injustices of the past, which perpetuate white supremacy and white arrogance in South Africa.

Cyril RAMAPHOSA vowed to address corruption yesterday as he was voted in by Parliament as South Africa's new president, after the scandal-tainted reign of his predecessor Jacob Zuma.

Bets for upcoming Southampton vs Arsenal fight
Neither Arsene Wenger nor his players could afford themselves to lose another match if they still want to be in the top four. Arsenal is still keeping the dream to be qualified in Champions League after the victory over Manchester on Sunday.

The cabinet will not be dissolved as would have been the case had Zuma been voted out in a vote of no-confidence.

Other graft allegations have centred on the three Gupta brothers, who are accused of unfairly obtaining lucrative government contracts and even hand-picking Zuma's ministerial appointments.

Eight suspects were arrested on Wednesday during operations in Bloemfontein and Johannesburg.

Mr Zuma has been facing corruption claims.

Zuma had been the President of South Africa for 9 years, but his tenure was marred by scandal and corruption allegations.

The South African parliament has elected Cyril Ramaphosa as the country's new president.

In 2016, the Constitutional Court ruled that Mr Zuma had to pay back some of the £10 million of public funds that were used to upgrade his rural home in Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal.

"The Secretariat commends President Zuma for the statesmanship he has portrayed by accepting the decision of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress and respecting and upholding the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa", Tax said.
