Canada's Rachel Homan Loses Her Curling Match To Britain, Won't Make Podium

Canada's skip Rachel Homan center launches the stone during their women's curling match against Japan at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Gangneung South Korea Monday Feb. 19 2018

With the Olympic men's curling round robin winding down, all four Canadians were near the top of the rankings in terms of percentages at their respective positions and, on paper, it looked like they were in control.

The Canadians brought a rare three-game Olympic curling losing streak into the game despite the fact that they were playing very well themselves. "I'm still a bit disappointed, we wanted to try and qualify for the playoffs for Canada". Homan then faced a hard final shot, which had to make its way around a cluster of rocks to the bullseye. If they don't, they would be the first Canadian rink to fail to reach the semifinals at the Olympics.

There had to be a first time, eventually. "It just happens. That's sports". "They saw the Maple Leaf and played incredible against us", Bernard said.

"Everyone thinks it's unknown territory for us, but we've definitely grinded it out before", she said.

"Especially on the women's side, every single team that was here earned the right to be here and are all unbelievable", Canada's Lisa Weagle said. They handled this as only Canadians would.

That statement from Miskew could raise a question about how Canada selects its curling representatives for the Olympics. "But these teams are playing well against them".

They battled. It wasn't their week, but Homan's team never quit. "If we can come out tomorrow and win, then we're in a decent spot". I have a job to do and that job is to get as many wins as possible.

Canada's Kevin Koe was 5-3 with one game remaining in the men's round robin against Denmark. Her shooter stayed in the rings for a point and a 4-2 lead.

Muirhead blanked the seventh to keep hammer and scored two in the eighth to deadlock the game 8-8.

Muirhead played a raised double take-out in the penultimate end - effectively a plant which took out two of her opponents' stones - to swing the match in her favour and ultimately seal a 6-5 win.

Homan's attempted to clear removed just one.

The 10th was a disaster for Canada as Great Britain was lying three before Miskew even threw her third stones.

"They played really well - they put the rocks in the right spots and we really didn't", Homan, Canada's "skip", or captain, said after the stunning 6-5 defeat.

Homan struggled to find draw weight throughout the week and wound up curling 77 per cent overall and just 72 per cent on draws.

Smith said: "We didn't create enough chances and they were sharper than us".

And now the only thing they will leave South Korea with is crushing disappointment. Sweden, Britain and Japan were 5-3 with China, the United States and Canada hanging on for their playoff lives at four losses.

But China's Bingyu Wang, the 2010 bronze medallist, had a better hit game going than Homan at 82 per cent accuracy to 69. Muirhead had hammer to start the game and hit for one in the first. Eve Muirhead and her rink started slow but have found their rhythm to climb to 5-3.

Canada's uneven performance during the Games rocked the curling world, particularly Canadians who are by far the most feverish curling fans on the planet.
