Driver in Trump motorcade detained after gun found

A White House staffer drove the press van to a nearby golf course after all drivers were removed from their vehicles

The driver of a press van that was part of a motorcade was detained outside of the president's Mar-a-Lago resort by law enforcement for having a personal firearm in his baggage, The Hill reports.

"All Secret Service security measures worked", the agency said in a statement, stressing that nobody under their protection was ever in any danger. The gun was found inside a bag during a search done by the Secret Service in a parking lot outside the Mar-a-Lago club grounds in Florida.

The Atlantic Ocean is seen adjacent to President Donald Trump's beach front Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida - also sometimes called his Winter White House - on January 11, 2018. Secret Service noted he was in legal possession of the firearm.

According to Fox News, the driver told the Secret Service that the firearm was left in the personal vehicle prior to the assignment and forgot to remove it.

On Monday, Trump hit the golf course after avoiding one of his favorite hobbies over the weekend out of respect for the 17 people who were killed during a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, last Wednesday. The outside contractor hired to drive a van of journalists in the White House press pool was then pulled aside.

The Secret Service said in a statement that the matter has been resolved after the driver was "briefly detained" and the incident was investigated by local authorities and the Secret Service.

The security screening took place in a parking lot across the street from the Mar-a-Lago resort, about an hour before press vans were to joined up with the presidential motorcade. Apparently, they're not as good at it as hired help, as one of the vans was later involved in a minor crash.
