Ex-Browns receiver has hand amputated; waited 10 months to share details

Massaquoi still has his left thumb but the rest of the fingers on that hand were amputated

Massaquoi, who was a second-round pick out of Georgia by the Cleveland Browns back in 2009, played four years in the NFL.

"I guess when I look at my hand, I'm just thankful", he said.

Massaquoi has not played in the National Football League since 2013, so he isn't dealing with the added pain of jeopardizing his career because of the injury.

Former Browns receiver Mohamed Massaquoi made a career in football with his hands, and in a cruel twist of fate, he lost most of one of them in an ATV accident a year ago.

"They're seeing what actually happened, I'm seeing what I think happened", Massaquoi said.

"There's something that just feels like an explosion just went off in my hand".

The 31-year-old North Carolina native said he was airlifted to a hospital, where doctors braced him for the worst, telling Massaquoi that they would need to see how his hand healed to determine if it could be saved or not. My friend, on the other hand, thinks that my hand just went through a meat grinder or something like that. Meanwhile you can see the panic and the fear in everybody so you know it's not good. During that season, Massaquoi had a remarkable game on the road against Kentucky, which saw him catch eight passes for 191 yards and a touchdown. However, after it didn't heal as hoped, four fingers were amputated. He also explains the mental adjustment he had to make once he realized a part of what made him who he was will no longer be there. I'm in shock, so I don't feel it. 'This just gives you a perspective of how precious life is, how fast things can change.

"Sometimes you may see yourself as different and they still see you as you and you can take those two experiences and meet somewhere in the middle to continue your journey".

Massaquoi said he's learned to value relationships more as part of his recovery and process since the accident. I'm thankful for family, for friendship.

The adjustment has been hard for Massaquoi, who played four seasons with the Browns, compiling 118 catches for 1,745 yards and seven touchdowns. I'd also like to thank Dr.
