Gay Canadian figure skater Eric Radford creates history at the Winter Olympics

Eric Radford is one of 14 openly gay athletes competing in PyeongChang, but thanks to his superb skating in South Korea, he's the only one from that group who can claim to be the first with winter gold.

Radford, 33, and skating partner Meagan Duhamel wowed the crowds with their free skate program on February 12, helping to capture Canada's first gold of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games in the team figure skating event.

The 33-year-old figure skater also won a silver medal at the 2014 Sochi Games. Its team took gold with 73 points, OAR (Olympic Athletes of Russia) took silver with 66 points, and U.S. took 62 points for third place.

Canadian skater Eric Radford makes history by becoming the first openly gay athlete to win Winter Olympics gold. He has since continued to build himself a large social media following with this witty postings and LGBTI advocacy.

The strong opening weekend for out LGBTQ athletes comes after nearly half of those who competed at the 2016 Olympics in Rio took home a medal. "I just feel such pride".

The first ever openly gay athlete to win gold was Australian diver Matthew Mitcham who received the honor at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

One wrote: "You are such a class act and in New Orleans we took time off from Mardi Gras to give you one enormous standing ovation - sooo proud!" "I've gotten so many messages from young kids all over the country that my story has resonated with them", Rippon said. About 10 months later, Radford came out publicly as gay in an interview with Outsports' Cyd Zeigler.
