George Groves Outfoxes Chris Eubank Jr. As Gruelling Bout Goes The Distance

George Groves & Chris Eubank Jr Weigh In- Hilton Deansgate Manchester Britain

His rivals George Groves and Chris Eubank Jr have stolen most of the headlines in this eight-man tournament, but it would be foolhardy to write Smith off as the potential victor.

However, he appeared to have a shoulder injury at the end, which could hamper his preparation for the final of the World Boxing Super Series in June, against Callum Smith or Jurgen Brahmer.

Highly touted until 2015, the British super middleweight champion's ascent slowed just a little before this tournament re-ignited his mind and his body with desire and ambition.

The 29-year-old's career has previously been remembered for high-profile defeats - two to Carl Froch and one each to Badou Jack and James DeGale -but Groves proved too shrewd and too accomplished for bookies' favourite Eubank Jr at the Manchester Arena.

"I'm very, very happy with the performance", an elated Groves told ITV Box Office.

It was the challenger who suffered though, an accidental head clash opening a sizeable cut on the side of his right eye.

He maintained his record of never being knocked down but when he took a knee in the 10th round Groves was frustrated there was no mandatory count.

George Groves was the more accurate power puncher, landing 37.7% to 21.2% for Chris Eubank.

The intensity increased in the ninth, Groves often against the ropes but Eubank Jr's shots becoming wilder, and everyone, including him, knew he was going to need something special to live up to his own predictions. "Eubank's weakness might be his boxing ability at distance, where I feel Groves is the better man".

Yet, to his vast credit, he was still hanging in there and in the latter rounds constantly seeking to land a huge punch that might change the contest. "Chris Eubank didn't bring the pressure he said he would", Groves said.

Many watching the bout noticed that Groves had hurt his shoulder in the final round. Groves was the clear victor, and there is no merit behind a rematch.
