Google buys Xively to expand in market for connected devices

How Internet of Things will transform the world in next 10 years By Editorial 9 hours ago Feb 15 2018 Facebook Twitter

The technologies of Xively, which was part of LogMeIn, will be added to Google's cloud services, adding to Google's cloud competition with Amazon and Microsoft.

Google Cloud is set to boost its internet of things (IoT) services standing with the acquisition of Xively, a division of LogMeIn, for a reported US$50 million.

Now, Xively will allow the companies to do a lot more, like connecting new devices, managing them remotely and most importantly, transferring data from these devices into other systems.

Google said the plan is to integrate Xively's platform with its Cloud IoT Core offering, which is a fully managed service to easily and securely connect, manage and ingest data from globally dispersed devices that's now available in beta. Organizations signed up for Google's broader Google Cloud IoT Solution service now can connect their IoT data to the company's collection of analytics services including Cloud Pub/Sub, Cloud Dataflow and BigQuery.

"By 2020, it's estimated that about 20 billion connected things will come online, and analytics and data storage in the cloud are now the cornerstone of any successful IoT solution", Passemard said.

Xively provides enterprise-grade IoT which includes advanced device management, messaging, and dashboard capabilities.

DNI Coats Calls for 'National Cry' to Resist Ongoing Russian Campaign Ops
The intelligence chiefs told the Senate Intelligence Committee that they were concerned about the upcoming midterm elections. Pyongyang also will use cyber operations to raise funds and gather intelligence or launch attacks on South Korea and the US.

In this regard, earlier this month, on its last earnings call, Google parent Alphabet has disclosed its latest cloud business valuation - its G Suite portfolio of productivity apps and Google Cloud Platform public cloud together bring in around Dollars 1 billion per quarter.

The move comes amid several steps taken by the internet giant to raise its game in hardware, cloud and IoT businesses.

LogMeIn said the deal will see it leaving the IoT connectivity platform space and by handing their Xively team over to Google, it will arm the search giant with "great technology" making it "a far better fit" for the platform.

While the Google purchase of Xively - which remains subject to closing conditions - signals Google's ambitions in the area, it also highlights LogMeIn's loss of appetite for it.

During an appearance at Goldman Sachs' technology and internet conference in San Francisco, earlier this week, Diane Greene, Google Cloud CEO, appreciated & praised the importance of the Internet of Things.
