Google Lens Search Comes To More Phones

The Verge

Android's ARCore platform is now out of beta, and the 1.0 software developer kit (SDK) is launching.

Files Go is a storage manager that will help you free up storage in your device as well as manage all sorts of files easier.

But Google isn't stopping there.

In the world of Android, there are many choices when it comes to devices.

Among the devices highlighted by the new program are Google's own Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL offerings, but the list also includes the Huawei Mate 10 and P10, BlackBerry KeyOne and Motion, LG V30, Sony Xperia X, and the Nokia 8.

The team made a special effort to call out China as its next target. Additionally, those des will likely notice improvements and additional support hitting the devkit with the 1.0 update, including improved environmental understanding that allows players to place virtual objects on uniquely textured surfaces.

While ARCore will be exiting its preview and hitting 1.0 status, Google is still working with its preview of its Lens computer vision tool, though it says it will be bringing it to more users going forward. "It will be available in a future Android release".

Meanwhile, Google Lens, a feature that is now available Google Pixel devices and uses computer vision to quickly recognize objects, businesses, and other things around you, is said to release for both Google Assistant and Google Photos in the next few weeks. The company also talked up improvements and expanded availability of the Lens photo analysis app.

In a blog post on Friday, Google wrote: "We're inspired by the success of Android across a wide range of devices, including entry-level phones which in many cases are the first and only way people get access to the internet". Lately, the rumor mill points out that the multinational technology company has announced to unveil its first smartphone lineup with Android Oreo (Go edition) at the MWC 2018.

Unfortunately, the upcoming Google Lens expansion will only be available for English-language users. The next feature coming down the pipe is the ability to recognize common animals and plants, including different dog breeds and types of flowers. One of those companies is Snap, which used the new features to create an immersive AR experience in its mobile app, Snapchat. Despite having already announced the platform, Google's not previously demonstrated any phones that use it.
