Joaquin Phoenix as Joker in Coming Origin Story Film?

Joaquin Phoenix In Talks to Play The Joker In DC/Warner Bros. Standalone Movie

This wouldn't be Phoenix's first foray into the DC film universe. The movie is set to be produced as a stand-alone film by Todd Phillips for entertainment company Warner Bros. He's one of Mark Hamill's two most famous, beloved, and long-running characters, he's been played by Oscar victor Jack Nicholson, and Heath Ledger posthumously won an Oscar for playing him.

Joaquin Phoenix is reportedly in talks to play iconic DC Comics villain The Joker in a standalone film.

Reportedly, the actor is the top choice of the upcoming project's writer and director, Todd Philips, and is amenable to the idea of playing the character.

Nonetheless, as of this writing, Warner Bros has not yet issued an official statement to confirm the veracity of the reports saying Phoenix will play the Joker in the Clown Prince's origin story. This shouldn't be too surprising given the Joker's stature as one of the best villains of fiction (as well as a box office draw considering what he and Harley Quinn did for the otherwise toxically received Suicide Squad).

Phillips, who has also worked on Road Trip and War Dogs, will direct the movie and co-write it with Scott Silver. Imagine for a moment Phoenix's Commodus from Gladiator speaking with the Joker's singsong voice, and then try not to smile.

Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese is said to be attached as producer to the movie, which will lend inspiration from his films "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull", both of which are dark masterpieces, Comicbook.com reported. He was asked by Marvel to play the Hulk in The Avengers and was approached again for the titular role of Doctor Strange.

As alluded to earlier, Leto will not be featured in this film, since the movie would fall under a yet-to-be-announced new banner of DC Comics that would give rise to a whole new set of original storylines.

Phoenix now stars in the 2018 flick "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot".
