Mikaela Shiffrin Begins Gold Chase

Winter Olympics 2018 Lindsey Vonn live tweets 24-hour airline odyssey

"If all I did was the slalom, I'd have so much free time I might as well get another job, too", she said.

American Mikaela Shiffrin, reigning world champion Tessa Worley of France and 2010 Olympic champion Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany are three of the top contenders in women's giant slalom.

The 22-year-old slalom gold medalist from Sochi has racked up 10 World Cup victories this season but has managed to reach the podium just once in her last six races, a disappointing dip she attributed to fatigue.

Still, it's interesting to look back at the steps the Shiffrins took to instill killer skiing skills and an intense work ethic in their daughter.

"I don't feel pressure from anybody, any external pressure".

"She's so impressive about staying focused in the process", said Mike Day, Shiffrin's coach with the USA team.

"We had a tonne of races all back-to-back, I was rested and had great training and preparation going into that so I was able to carry my momentum through that whole stretch", she said. When I get mentally exhausted, I just get more emotional.

She arrived in South Korea about 1½ weeks ahead of her opening race and has trained about a half-dozen times.

"I would like to compete in everything", she said. "But I'm not actually sure whether I'll have the energy to do (all) that", she says. "It's insane how fast the time has gone", she says.

"He has what, 23 medals?" She may need a few more socks to stash the five gold-medal haul the alpine skiing super star could target at Pyeongchang.

Shiffrin has one medal so far.
