NBC Apologizes For Olympic Analyst's Remarks That Koreans Found Deeply Offensive

NBC pulled analyst and issued an apology

Japan, which colonised the Korean peninsula from 1910 to 1945, has left a deep legacy of mistrust and ill-feeling in South Korea.

Analyst Joshua Cooper Ramo has been removed from NBC's coverage of the Olympics after his controversial remark during the Opening Ceremony, according to a report.

The comments came after South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said Seoul was not seeking to renegotiate the agreement, but that Tokyo needed to make further efforts to help the victims "regain honor and dignity and heal wounds in their hearts".

Athletes from Japan march into the stadium at the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Gangwon Province, Friday.

USA Today also reported that NBC apologized through a statement read live on its cable and satellite channel NBCSN on Saturday (local time). "Joshua Cooper Ramo should not speak for Koreans and obviously doesn't know any Koreans either". Do you thank Japan for the Pearl Harbor raids? Just last month, Mr. Abe's attendance at the Games was in question after tensions escalated over Japan's refusal to reissue an apology for the Japanese military's role in forcing Korean and other women to work in military brothels during World War II.

"How can someone be an "Asian correspondent" and be so clueless?" wrote a blogger based in South Korea.

While introducing Japan, Ramos said the following, "Every Korean will you that Japan is a cultural, and technological, and economic example, has been so important to their own transformation".

In the wake of that apology, NBC has now decided that Ramo will no longer provide on-air analysis during the rest of their Olympics coverage.

"We received an official letter from NBC, saying that it apologizes for making the inappropriate comments", said The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic & Paralympic Games.

Ramo pointed out that Japan occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945, following it up with, "but every Korean will tell you that Japan as a cultural and technological and economic example has been so important to their own transformation".
