Qualcomm Snapdragon X24 LTE

Qualcomm's new X24 LTE modem can reach a ridiculously fast 2 gbps

Qualcomm Technologies spent a lot of time highlighting the role of 5G NR-based Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology in autonomous driving.

In Qualcomm's modem product portfolio, the X24 sits somewhere between the X50, which is theoretically capable of 5Gbps downlink, and the current-gen X16 in phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S8, Essential Phone, and Sony Xperia XZ Premium, which maxes out at 1-1.2Gbps.

In the meantime, Qualcomm's freshly announced X24 LTE modem will support 2 gigabit-per-second speeds, the first of its kind to do so. The modem also supports 4×4 MIMO on five carriers which can also achieve a theoretical maximum of 20 concurrent LTE streams.

Catering to the growing demand for high-speed data access, Qualcomm has unveiled the Snapdragon X24 as its newest LTE modem for mobile devices. According to Qualcomm, this functionality will allow for X24-equipped devices to connect to the entire range of spectrum bands available to carriers, which would increase overall performance beyond what we have now.

Qualcomm has revealed some of its plans for MWC 2018, which will include live demonstrations of its 5G technologies and Snapdragon X24 LTE modem. Sprint's 5G network, set to launch in the first half of next year, utilizes a different part of the spectrum than AT&T's will, for example, and so it may require a specialized RF front-end solution paired with Qualcomm's X50 modem on handsets. At top speed, it's twice as fast as the company's previous gigabit LTE modem, and while it's still unlikely to see those speeds in real life - which is more of a carrier-side problem - improving the technology in devices should still lead to faster speeds overall. The Snapdragon X24, on the other hand, is a future-ready modem - setting the ground for 5G connectivity. The Snapdragon X24 LTE modem will be featured in a live demonstration at Mobile World Congress Barcelona in conjunction with Ericsson, Telstra and NETGEAR. This unprecedented feature set is created to allow devices that feature the Snapdragon X24 LTE modem to utilize all spectrum assets available from a mobile operator, whether in licensed spectrum, or with License Assisted Access (LAA). It supports Full Dimension Multi-Input Multi-Output (FD-MIMO), a Massive MIMO technology that is foundational to 5G NR networks. In the uplink, Snapdragon X24 supports Category 20 upload speeds, 3x20 MHz CA and up to 256-QAM. It is also the first-announced chip built on a leading-edge 7 nanometer FinFET process that will lead to better power efficiency. Interestingly, the X24 also supports GNSS for even more accurate positioning (if GPS fails, GNSS will pick up a fix from other systems such as GLONASS or Galileo).

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can offer better mobile experiences such as 360-degree video, connected cloud computing, more entertainment and instant apps.
