Reducing Your Consumption Of These Foods Could Help Fight Breast Cancer

The research was looking at asparagine, an amino acid found in asparagus and lots of other foods.

Researchers from Cambridge have come up with a new study that shows that some foods may influence the spread of certain cancers.

The study is another example of the suggested link between diet and cancer, a concept that, if proven, may save countless lives from the dreaded disease.

A team of global cancer researchers have shown in mice that limiting the consumption of the amino acid asparagine stopped the spread of triple-negative breast cancer.

Experts in the field including Baroness Delyth Morgan, the chief executive at Breast Cancer Now have added that this study is still preliminary and should not prompt breast cancer patients to go on drastic diets without medical advice.

'When the availability of asparagine was reduced, tumour cells had reduced capacity for metastases in other parts of the body. The cells used are called triple-negative breast cancer cells, which grow and spread faster than most other cancers.

People who get subsidies will be largely shielded from those increases because the subsidies rise along with the premiums. That's expected to embolden some healthy people to go without coverage, which would raise premiums for those left behind.

However, due to the prevalence of asparagine in many types of food, drugs that block the intake of the amino acid, named L-asparagine, may prove to be easier to administer.

Investigators now are considering conducting an early-phase clinical trial in which healthy participants would consume a low-asparagine diet.

"If you remove asparagine from the diet, and cells of the body crank up asparagine, it would equalize the same as if you had a normal diet", he said. Asparagine can be made by the human body and is also found in food, with higher concentrations in asparagus, soy, dairy, poultry and seafood. "Instead, lowering blood levels of asparagine or blocking the enzyme asparagine synthetase in breast tumor cells might be the best path forward".

The research, published in Nature, also looked at patients with breast cancer and other types of malignant tumors, including kidney, head, and neck cancers.

If further research replicates this finding in humans, reducing cancer patients' consumption of asparagine could enhance existing therapies, Knott added.

One idea is to eat a supplemental meal replacement low in asparagine for breakfast and lunch, with dinner being a more normal diet low in the amino acid.
