RIP, Android Pay: Google replaces beloved mobile payment system

From what we can tell, Google Pay - G Pay - is a reskinned version of the Android Pay application. There's now a lot less friction for merchants who want to accept payments through Google: when a shop or app calls the new API, it'll automatically determine whether the user has Google Pay enabled and, if they do, allow them to pay with a saved credit card or debit card.

The newest feature is available in the version 17 of the Google Phone dialer app. Google plans to implement Google Pay everywhere it can, be it Android, Chrome, or YouTube, so one of the benefits of unifying everything under the Google Pay umbrella is that your payment information will follow you as you jump from platform to platform. Google Pay can also integrate NFC transit passes, starting with cities such as London, Kiev and Portland.

At first glance, the new Google Pay app is basically a redesign of Android Pay, with a look and feel that adheres closer to Google's own Material Design guidelines than the original.

Google Pay represents its attempt at unifying and simplifying its digital payments service across the web, in apps, in stores, and through peer-to-peer (P2P). Cards is the entrypoint to your digital wallet, where you can select the payment method to use at checkout.

Since Tez is a pretty new product and the users have just become used to the branding, so renaming it would be foolish.

Unveiled in a blog post on Monday, Google Pay will offer all the functionalities that you have come to expect from Android Pay or Google Wallet. That means that users who bank with Bank of America in the US or a Google partner like Mbank in Poland, you can set up Google Pay right from your bank's app without having to even install Google Pay.

And more features are coming. "In the meantime, the Wallet app is now called Google Pay Send, and we've given it a fresh coat of paint to go with the Google Pay brand".

The new app merges the capability of in-app, online, and retail purchases of Android Pay with the peer-to-peer (P2P) functionality of Google Wallet, although that won't be coming for another few months, with US and United Kingdom users getting it first.
