Salon asks visitors to turn off their adblockers or start mining cryptocurrency

Salon to Mine Monero with Ad-Blocking Readers' Computers

To end the explanation, Salon makes a pitch that the "possibilities for [cryptocurrency] are limitless" including secure online voting, predicting the impact of climate change and finding alien life.

"We are earning something when we were earning nothing", he said of ad-blocking on the website. Ironically, many ad blockers will stop coin-mining software too, as will JavaScript blockers like NoScript. Salon found a way to keep the customers happy by taking ads away as long as they're willing to mine some cryptocurrency for them.

Readers using software to avoid seeing adverts are presented with a pop-up window, says the Financial Times, which asks them if they would like to use their computers' processing power for "calculations".

This is according to the site's FAQ page, which explains its new feature "Suppress Ads" as an alternative to ad blocking. For news sites like Salon, the majority of their revenue comes from online advertisements, and with many people blocking these ads using browser plugins, they're struggling to turn a profit.

"We noticed you're using an ad blocker".

"Back in the 1990s, as now, Salon offered the common relationship of serving ads to its users in exchange for keeping most of our content free", Salon wrote. "Please consider disabling your ad blocker so we can continue to create the content you come here to enjoy".

Though Salon's mining program is opt-in, unlike the hackers', mining cryptocurrency will likely result in a less pleasant browsing experience.

When a person visits Salon with an ad blocker, a pop up appears asking the person to either remove the ad blocker or allow cryptocurrency mining to occur. This is followed by a "learn more" link.

Still, it's unclear exactly how much Salon will make revenue-wise from its cryptocurrency activities.

Mining is a process that involves the solving of complex mathematical problems exist to help complete other transactions that are being sent on the network.

Everyone is familiar with Bitcoin.

For the most part, using browsers to mine cryptocurrency has remained the purview of criminals, scammers and other grey-market players. There are thousands of cryptocurrencies. Salon is mining the privacy-focused cryptocurrency Monero. Monero is now popular among criminals because it offers more anonymity than Bitcoin. These will be your choices from now on when you go to Salon's website. Coinhive gets a bad rap because it can be used for illicit purposes, though the software is widely regarded as legitimate, as is the coin that it mines. Last year, the popular torrent site Pirate Bay also started using Coinhive to earn extra income, and Showtime was caught doing the same thing with its site in September.
