Samsung unveils world's largest SSD with whopping 30TB of storage

According to Samsung, the drive - catchily named PM1643 - is built from 32 sticks of 1TB NAND flash packages, all containing 16 layers of 512GB 3D Vertical NAND chips.

This is thanks to Samsung, which announced on Monday it will start mass producing the largest capacity SCSI SSD.

Samsung has unveiled the world's largest solid state drive - an unassuming-looking bit of kit that boasts a whopping 30.72 terabytes of storage.

If you want to know how exactly you'll be able to benefit from this greater storage space, think more than 600 days of non-stop movie watching. As per the claim by the company this SSD has 30.72 terabytes of storage. Sequential read performance clocks in at up to 2,100 MB/s, while write speeds are given as 1,700 MB/s. These benchmarks are about four times as fast as the random read performance and three times as fast as the sequential read performance of the average 2.5-inch SATA SSD that you'll find in a consumer desktop or laptop, including Samsung's own SSD 850 EVO. It delivers almost twice the capacity and performance of the previous generation. This is notably the first time when an SSD has included a TSV-applied DRAM. The new drive also incorporates the TSV (Through Silicon Via) technology that interconnects 8Gb DDR4 chips creating up to 10 units of 4GB TSV DRAM units, with a total of 40GB of DRAM. The advanced controller integrates nine controllers from previous high-capacity SSDs into a single package.

Importantly Samsung's error correction code (ECC) algorithm ensures high reliability and minimal storage maintenance. There's also metadata protection and data retention and recovery from power cuts. Samsung says buyers can expect an endurance level of one full drive write per day (DWPD), or 30,72 TB of data every day over the length of the PM1643's five year warranty. That 16TB drive was also launched by Samsung in March 2016. The company will be launching 16.36TB, 7.68TB, 3.84TB, 1.92TB, 960GB, and 800GB versions later this year; those smaller drives should be a lot more affordable, obviously.
