South Africa's Ramaphosa: ANC Working to Resolve Fate of Zuma

Crunch Monday for South Africa's ANC on Zuma's fate

Ramaphosa said he understands South Africans want the country's leadership to resolve its problems and that the national executive committee (NEC) "will be doing precisely that".

Several thousand ANC supporters wearing the party's signature yellow, green and black colours attended the rally at the symbolic Grand Parade in central Cape Town. Politically, however, that case never went away: The opposition vowed not to let the matter drop, and has since used it to illustrate its lack of faith in the president through eight no-confidence votes in relation to his alleged corrupt acts before and during his presidency.

Zuma has clung to power after rejecting a request by his party's senior officials to resign a week ago.

A key committee of South Africa's ruling ANC party will hold an emergency meeting Monday as the nation awaits word on whether President Jacob Zuma will resign soon because of corruption allegations, South African media reported.

"It's her own personal view, as family.we still believe in the democratically elected leadership of the ANC under the leadership of Comrade Ramaphosa, whom we will all support to lead the country beyond", Zuma's son Edward Zuma told the SABC on Saturday.

He was speaking at the launch of the ANC's celebration of the 28 years since former president Nelson Mandela was released from the Victor Verster prison in Cape Town.

"We are now engaged in discussions around the transition to a new administration and specifically the position of the President of the Republic‚" Ramaphosa said.

The president, who denies wrongdoing, is due to end his second five-year term at elections next year. The two have quarrelled in recent months, with Ramaphosa publicly criticising Zuma's decision past year to fire his respected finance minister, Pravin Gordhan, and his failure to tackle corruption.

He said his discussions with Zuma had to be conducted with "care and purpose" and with the aim of uniting South Africans. "As we emerge from a period of difficulty, a period of disunity and discord, this Nelson Mandela centenary year offers us what I would call, a new beginning".

"As the leadership of the African National Congress, we are now engaged in discussions around the transition to a new administration and specifically to resolve the issues of the position of the President of the Republic".

The Sunday Times has learnt that Ramaphosa is trying to secure Zuma's co-operation in the state-capture investigations and has solicited opinions on legal avenues that would allow the president to avoid prosecution or receive a reduced sentence.
