South Whittier School Shooting Plot Averted, Authorities Say

Authorities say a student's plot for a mass shooting at a Southern California high school led to the discovery of a cache of weapons at the student's home. "They also learned that a Smith & Wesson semi-automatic weapon was registered to his home address".

The school then reported the teen to authorities, who found two assault rifles in his home, including one that was unregistered, according to the AP.

It was unclear if the suspect has been arrested, or who purchased or owns the weapons.

The 17-year-old, who has not been named because he is a juvenile, has been arrested and faces a charge of making a criminal threat.

On Feb. 16, two days after the Florida high school massacre, the 17-year-old boy allegedly said "he was going to shoot up the school some time in the next three weeks", Sheriff Jim McDonnell said at a news conference Wednesday.

Robert Jacobsen, general counsel for the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, said the teen didn't like a teacher's rule banning headphones in class but that school officials don't have any other information about concerns regarding the student.

Jacobsen added that when questioned by officials, the student didn't have a weapon on him.

"They felt there was enough there that they should call law enforcement so they can investigate further", Jacobsen said.

School guard Mr Chavez told reporters: "I'm not hero".

School safety officer Marino Chavez thought he overheard something alarming Friday at a Whittier, Calif., high school just 48 hours after a Florida school shooting.

"He did say that he was just kidding, he did not mean it", Chavez recalled.

The teen allegedly made the threat while at the continuation high school campus at 14625 Keese Drive, which is in the unincorporated community of South Whittier. Numerous campuses have been targeted and police in nearby Long Beach have increased their presence at schools.
