Southern Mexico hit by second natural disaster in a week

The helicopter crashed killing 13 people and injuring 15 all of them on the ground

Mexico's southern state of Oaxaca requested federal emergency funds on Sunday to supply food, shelter and health services in more than 30 municipalities battered by last week's powerful quake in a region still reeling from temblors in September.

The 7.2 magnitude quake caused only material damage when it struck late Friday, but it triggered a tragedy in the town of Santiago Jamiltepec in Oaxaca state, where the chopper landed on its side, crushing a van.

The tremor was strong enough to trigger natural disaster alarms in Mexico City, more than 200 miles (320 km) away, but was shorter and less intense than one of Friday in the same area that damaged about 1,000 houses.

The US Geological Survey said the quake hit at 12:57 am (0657 GMT).

The tremor triggered natural disaster alarms more than 320 kilometers away and caused residents of Mexico City to panic, sending many people rushing into the streets, one witness recounted to Reuters. There are no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The natural disaster damaged about 50 homes in Santiago Jamiltepec, as well as the town hall and church, but no one was killed, the interior ministry said.
