Syria to Back Kurds Against Turkey in Afrin

US to work with Turkey on liberated areas in Syria

Turkey launched an offensive in Afrin last month to sweep the YPG from its southern border.

The deployment will be of "popular" forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, Sky News Arabia reported.

On Monday morning, Syrian state media had said the pro-government militia would enter Afrin "within hours" - although the forces never materialised.

Jabbour said she doubted the regime would move into Afrin because "behind the scenes Turkish forces and Syrian forces are talking to each other", adding Russian Federation would not allow the regime to enter direct confrontation with Turkey.

Turkey threatened on Monday to hit back at Syrian pro-government troops if they deploy in an enclave in northern Syria to protect a Kurdish militia that Ankara is battling there.

If pro-Assad forces support the YPG militias, Erdogan reportedly added, "there will be consequences".

SANA said the planned deployment followed an agreement between the Syrian government and the YPG.

Observers have long suggested that a deal whereby the Syrian regime enters Afrin and YPG forces redeploy away from the border with Turkey could offer a way out of the military operation, which has dragged on with limited progress on the ground for Turkey and its Syrian proxies.

The Turkish government considers the YPG, its Female Protection Units, known as the YPJ, and its Democratic Union Party, PYD, as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which has led an armed insurgency in their fight for autonomy in southeast Turkey under a communist-inspired ideology called "democratic confederalism".

Jana Jabbour, professor of Political Science at Sciences Po university in Paris, said the Turks were "struggling to move forward" because of the "organisation of the Kurdish YPG forces and their combativeness". The YPG has always been supported by the United States in the fight against the so-called Islamic State group and were responsible for seizing their self-proclaimed capital, Raqqa.

"Or more easily, it can close the air space for the Turkish air force to operate, which would make any military operation by Turkey very hard because it is the superior air force that has given them the edge in Afrin".

The Kurdish official told the AP that the reports about the YPG handing over their weapons are "totally untrue". The Syrian Civil Defense, volunteer first responders known as the White Helmets, said 30 people were killed in eastern Ghouta area.

While UN officials say hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in the conflict, Syrian regime officials say the death toll is closer to 10,000.
