System Shock remaster put on hold after raising $1.3 million on Kickstarter

The platform's image isn't looking any better today with the news that Nightdive Studios' update on System Shock.

After raising over $1.3 million on Kickstarter, developer Nightdive Studios has put its System Shock remake on hiatus, with the company putting out a statement and Polygon picking it up.

Though the crowdfunding campaign was a complete success, the studio's CEO Stephen Kick admitted that the team was overly ambitious about the project and that they have strayed away from the original game.

Kick, who takes responsibility for the status of the remake, said the team's vision began to change during development. Kick assures that "System Shock is going to be completed and all of our promises fulfilled". With so much invested in the project and System Shock 3 coming around the corner as well, the onus is on Nightdive Studios to produce a game that backers can be proud of. The studio enlisted the help of Fallout: New Vegas team members such as Chris Avellone, Jessica Johnson, Kevin Manning, and Dan Rubalcaba to work on the title.

The team raised just $1.3 million for the project; an amount that certainly won't carry a full team through the production of an ambitious RPG remake project such as System Shock.

→ A modern take on System Shock, a faithful reboot; it's not Citadel Station as it was, but as you remember it.

→ Terri Brosius reprises her role as SHODAN, and new VO will be recorded.

→ The user interface, game mechanics, enemies, and puzzles will be updated to reflect modern aesthetics and sensibilities, while maintaining the feel of the original.

As you might expect, the game's expectation to release sometime in 2018 is increasingly unlikely, especially given the unspecified length of time this hiatus will last. More importantly, it paved the way for other important titles. We have been working with Videri String Quartet, and we are in talks with Prague's FILMharmonic Orchestra about recording the score for System Shock.

And since it came up on Twitter, we will note it here as well: Refunds to backers will not be offered. With a roster of world-class musicians, we have set a stretch goal to release a remixed version of the original soundtrack intact!
