The Trump administration wants to privatize the International Space Station

NASA could stop funding to the International Space Station after 2024, at which point a commercial venture could take over. "We have a lot of work to do".

"Consistency is key", Axiom's Suffredini said, if the U.S.is going to continue to have a human presence in low Earth orbit.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-TX, made it clear last week that he opposes any plan to terminate the International Space Station as long as it can be productively operated.

The space station now is authorized through 2024 and while many at NASA believe the outpost's lifetime could be extended at least another four years to 2028, no such decisions have been made by the United States and its worldwide partners - Russia, the European Space Agency, Canada and Japan.

Private businesses already have a hand in operating the space station. Congress earlier this month passed a spending package that set limits through the end of the next budget year. So the White House's proposal is more a statement of priorities - and not everyone is happy with it.

The budget makes several structural changes to NASA's budget, including ending funding for a separate "Space Technology" directorate created by the Obama administration, and rolling that research into the "Deep Space Exploration Systems" account.

But finding companies to run USA operations cost-effectively by 2025 would be a heavy lift. But he's said he not convinced the industry could bear the financial burden of maintaining the space station by the mid-2020s.

Among the concerns amongst space experts about Trump's proposal are the legal liabilities an orbiting, inhabited space station could run into. NASA is in charge of USA science and technology that has to do with airplanes or space.

The end of federal funding for the ISS would not necessarily mean the end of the station, or at least some parts of it, according to the document.

"It's a hard issue", Wörner said, however a partly privatized space station would "not be the end of the world".

According to The Washington Post, the USA government is hoping to make the Space Station a sort of real estate venture ran by private organizations.

But some questioned who would want to take over the station. Both nations are required for the space station to function with any degree of safety using separate flight control centers. "We look forward to working together with the Administration and Congress to preserve American leadership in space with the resources to match".

Elon Musk's SpaceX company and Orbital ATK have been delivering to the station since 2012. "So the investment made in that and the development activities made in that, unless something happens relativity quickly in the commercial market to offset that in low-earth orbit could be an impact", Frank Slazer, vice president of space systems at the Aerospace Industries Association, told FOX Business, regarding the impact privatization could have on Boeing and SpaceX.

Hertz also added that only way to preserve the USA space agency's ability to meet the established target cost and deliver the project on time is to maintain progress against the existing plan, should Congress decide against Trump's proposal to eliminate WFIRST.
