Trump advocates government shutdown as Congress faces another spending deadline

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of N.Y. accompanied by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of Calif. left and others members of the House and Senate Democrats speaks during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Was

"No one would suggest it is ideal, but we worked hard to find common ground and stay focused on serving the American people", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in announcing the agreement.

The Democratic leader has dropped his push to use the budget talks to extract concessions on immigration from Republicans, leaving aside threats to shut down the government over the issue.

The House of Representatives voted early Friday for a two-year budget deal that raises both defense and domestic spending by hundreds of billions of dollars, approving a package that would also reopen the federal government after it shut down just past midnight.

The massive budget deal, which includes a stopgap temporary measure to prevent a government shutdown, includes $300 billion for the military.

Schumer called the budget "An historic, bipartisan budget deal" that will increase federal investments in NY.

Also on Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., met with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to work out a long-term spending measure that would keep the government funded for the next two years. Only 73 Democrats voted for the bill; 67 Republicans voted against it. Instead, the Democrats prepared to cut a deal that would reap tens of billions of dollars for other priorities - including combatting opioids - while taking their chances on solving the immigration impasse later.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., had linked progress on the budget with action to address the immigration program, but other Democrats are beginning to agitate for delinking the two, lest the opportunity for a budget pact be lost.

The debt ceiling will be raised by the appropriate amount until March 2019.

McConnell noted that after passage, the Appropriations committees "will have six weeks to negotiate detailed appropriations and deliver full funding for the remainder of fiscal year 2018".

He also said that the deal has the support of the White House, although he did not provide any specifics in that regard, Efe reported.

"I'd love to see a shutdown if we can't get this stuff taken care of", Trump said at a White House meeting focused on cracking down on the notorious MS-13 gang.

White House officials said the lack of a signing ceremony indicated Trump's displeasure with the last-minute additions that will further add to the government's ballooning deficit.

House Speaker Paul Ryan urged all House members to support the deal, saying it broke the "logjam" on public priorities and "will ensure that America's armed forces have more of the resources they need to keep America safe".

Once the party of fiscal discipline, Republicans are learning under President Donald Trump that spending money is much easier in Washington than cutting back.

Democrats seemed similarly conflicted.

In the end, however, Democrats declined to hold the spending bill hostage over immigration.

Pelosi repeated demands for a government funding agreement that includes consideration of Dreamers-800,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the USA as children.

But, she said, without a commitment from Ryan to allow a free-flowing debate on immigration protections for DREAMers, "this package does not have my support".

"The Republican moral cowardice must end". But Trump ended the program last September, setting March 5 as a deadline for resolving the issue. The legislation would require the secretary of Homeland Security to produce a southern border security strategy, including "physical barriers", to gain operational control and "situational awareness" along the border.

Several bipartisan efforts have stalled.
