Trump aide: Some immigrants 'too lazy' to sign up for DACA

But the 652-page budget bill says nothing about protecting the Dreamer immigrants, and that largely explains why a quarter of Senate Democrats and a third of House Democrats voted no. Passage left Democrats with little leverage to force congressional action on preventing deportation of hundreds of thousands of the young immigrants who arrived in the U.S.as children and remain here without permanent legal protection.

Trump is pushing Congress to abide by his March 5 deadline but five Republican congressional aides familiar with the negotiations say lawmakers feel less urgency now.

Citing a controversial poll from the right-wing news outlet the Daily Caller, Donald Trump claimed that 70 percent of the country wants an immigration deal that includes both DACA and funding for a border wall during an early morning tweet.

The president commented during a White House round-table on the MS-13 gang, where he also blasted the "stupidity" of US immigration law. A White House blueprint for immigration reform also calls for funding for a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border, a reduction in legal immigration to the United States, and prioritizing newcomers with advanced work skills.

Back in September, President Trump made a decision to end DACA in March. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is appealing the court ruling, and unless higher courts rule on the legality of the program, DHS will be required to continue renewing DACA visas.

Trump's latest threat is part of a pressure campaign he has been waging to try to get Democrats to sign onto a sweeping immigration plan that they've rejected. He added, "Right now, the champion of all people who are DACA is Donald Trump".

About 800,000 have applied for and received DACA protections since the program began in 2012. Under this policy, DACA recipients would qualify for citizenship as part of the almost two million eligible people.

White House chief of staff John Kelly said Tuesday he told lawyers reviewing the document to "get back to me" by the end of day Thursday. This policy also requests $25 billion in wall funding, ideally in a lump sum.

Making his case for tighter border security, President Donald Trump has repeatedly linked immigration to criminality, highlighting immigrant gang violence, calling family reunification a national security threat and bemoaning the death of a pro football player involved in a vehicle accident with a man living in the country illegally.

"It makes President Obama look like a master of financial restraint", said Mark Meadows, R-N.C., chairman of the ultra-conservative Freedom Caucus.

"Once we catch them and detain them, I can not remove them by virtue of them being in a gang", said Nielsen.

"They are not a priority for deportation", Kelly said of Dreamers who've not accumulated criminal records.

"It's cold comfort to DACA people that if Congress does nothing, they're still safe in the loving arms of the Department of Homeland Security", said Durbin. But Nielsen said in an interview last month with CBS News that DHS will "enforce the law".

"I'd love to see a shutdown if we can't get this stuff taken care of", Trump told reporters at the White House. "But the president will not take yes for an answer".

"The president is a dealmaker", said the first former Trump adviser. "Our colleagues on the other side who don't like the proposal have not offered a counter-offer that meet the four pillars" Trump asked for, Cornyn said.
