U.S. luger Emily Sweeney involved in scary crash in Pyeongchang

American Luger Emily Sweeney Knocked Out of Olympics After Terrifying Crash

Sweeney was heading down during the fourth run of the luge competition in PyeongChang when she became sideways on her toboggan.

Emily Sweeney, 24, was injured in the final run of the luge competition in Pyeonchang after crashing against a wall around Curve 9.

She initially put her feet down to slow her progress but quickly began to rock back and forth at more than 60 miles per hour.

She was able to walk toward the finish about 10 minutes after the crash, albeit very gingerly and with some assistance from team and on-site medical personnel.

South Korea had been Sweeney's first Winter Olympics appearance after she narrowly missed out on going to the Vancouver games in 2010 - losing the final spot on the team to her older sister Megan.

Google: Ads Don't Ruin the Web, Site Owners Do (Premium)
Non-compliant publishers are expected to have their ads suspended for a period of 30 days. Put another way, in an ideal world, Chrome's ad blocker would not have any work to do.

She was taken to hospital for assessment. She was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. Upon exiting the course, she received a standing ovation from the other lugers and was even able to say, "I'm fine", which, if you weren't crying already, certainly sealed the deal. "I knew I wanted to continue being an athlete, but I didn't want to only be an athlete".

Curve 9 has been a problem for sliders throughout the early portion of the Olympics, causing many to skid, lose control and lose some time.

"I've never been so relieved than when I saw her getting up and walking", said American teammate Summer Britcher, who was choking back tears.

Americans are still only on the fringe of the women's luge world, where Germany again dominated Tuesday night, with Natalie Geisenberger defending her Olympic gold medal. Sweeney's official result was DNF, for Did Not Finish. But it is a night such as this one that US lugers say is the best opportunity to grow the sport - by winning medals, by grabbing the spotlight.
