Uttar Pradesh: Bus torched in Allahabad to protest against law student's murder

Grabs from a video clipping show the murderous assault on the youth near a restaurant in Katra area of Allahabad on Saturday

Hundreds of students on Monday took to the streets in Allahabad town, pelting stones and torching a bus, to protest the brutal lynching of a Dalit law student by a group of people following an argument at a restaurant.

Dilip Saroj who fell unconscious after being thrashed, died in hospital on Saturday morning. He was attacked outside a restaurant in Colonelganj on Friday night.

Angry students aligned to the Samajwadi Yuvjan Sabha (SYS) and the All India Students' Association (AISA) took out a protest march yesterday and raised anti-government and anti-police slogans.

A waiter at the restaurant, Munna Singh Chauhan, has been arrested and two policemen have been suspended. They were also demanding a compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the family of the deceased.

Hailing from Hathigawa area in Pratapgarh, Dilip was living in a rented accommodation in Omgayatri Nagar to pursue his studies, police said. Following the incident, a distressing video came out, in which outside a restaurant a group of men can be clearly seen beating the law student with hockey sticks, broken pipe and bricks.

A ruckus also witnessed in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council over the killing of the Dalit youth. While police was busy in shooting innocent people in encounters, criminals were killing people, he added.

He said in just 10 months of Bharatiya Janata Party's rule in the state, "jungle rule" could be seen. Alleging that BJP ministers were not following law and were using unparliamentary language against the opposition, he said, "this is threat to democracy".

He asked the government to give the student's family Rs5mn in compensation.

"With such soaring crime, the Chief Minister is inviting people to invest in UP".
