Windows 10 S Is Dead, Long Live S Mode

Krales The Verge

Although not as quick as predicted last year, Windows 10's worldwide market share has surpassed that of the 8-year-old Windows 7 for the first time, according to StatCounter's data released for January 2017 and January 2018.

The lead that Windows 10 now has over Windows 7 is still pretty small, though it is unlikely that Windows 7 will again take the lead over Windows 10 next month.

Windows 10 might finally be the most popular version of Windows out there. But security updates will be there until 2020. Microsoft's assumption is, most likely, that buyers of those machines wouldn't be interested in a locked-down OS anyway. This will lead to an expansion in Windows 10 editions, including a new "S Mode" which will replace the education-focused Windows 10 S. For more information, contact your Microsoft account team. These moves will push IT to migrate to Windows 10 and ensure that any holdouts pay up for Office 365.

Windows 10 Spring Creators Update will land in April and it will introduce a number of features, the new update features are aimed at productivity. Windows 10 Pro in S Mode, Windows 10 Home in S Mode, and so on, and so forth.

Microsoft's LTSC releases seem to be following a somewhat unpredictable pattern.

Will Windows 10 in "S Mode" be powerful enough for consumers? Nor will unsupported Windows 10 semi-annual releases. That schedule seems a bit faster than what had been announced back in November. But when they do launch, PC owners who want the latest standalone Office apps, rather than the subscription-based Office 365, need either Windows 10 or the next Long-Term Servicing version of Windows Server. There will be no MSI install files provided for Office 2019, although "we will continue to provide MSI for Office Server products", Microsoft indicated.

The up and coming crackdown on trick software will likewise target applications that trap clients into taking surveys, downloading documents, or agreeing to accept emails that are of no use. There's also greater support for customization by schools and other organizations.

In contrast Office 2019 will receive five years of mainstream support followed by only two years of extended support - meaning support for both Office 2016 and Office 2019 will end on the same date, October 14th 2025. Furthermore, Microsoft has revised the support lifecycle for Office 2019. Extended support will end 10/14/2025. It was mentioned that Office 2019 won't be hitting those PCs who are running any OS version later than Windows 10.

Microsoft's out-of-the-blue Office support restrictions and exceptions have been seen before.
