The Chicago area absorbed six inches of snow with another four inches in Milwaukee and up to two inches in Detroit, the broadcaster said.

Though the snow will wane off by Friday night, the winter weather won't be done just yet.

Early Friday, the National Weather Service received reports of 4 inches of snow in northern IL.

However additional accumulating snow will likely follow up with a wide band of snow expected to surge back over our area from the southwest Friday night into Saturday morning, adding perhaps several inches and causing another round of snow-covered roads and slow/dangerous travel conditions.

Slide-offs and crashes also were reported early Friday.

The storm that started Thursday evening in Iowa and Nebraska also created treacherous driving conditions and forced the cancellation of more than 1,300 flights in Chicago and Detroit.

"The kids couldn't wait to get out today", she said.

Weather service meteorologist Charles Mott said the morning rush in Chicago "is gonna be trouble".

Winter storm warnings were issued by the National Weather Service for parts of northwest OH, southern Lower Michigan, northern IN, northern IL, southern Wisconsin and eastern Iowa, where show is expected to be the heaviest.

Sunday snow now looks to be coming in the mid morning hours.

"The good news is we're tried and tested here", he said.

"It's part of living in MI", a smiling Stawasz said from underneath his Detroit Red Wings winter hat.

Schools in Detroit shut for the day along with Wayne State University in Detroit and other schools across MI.

"Snow totals will still come close to a foot, and at this point, I wouldn't be surprised to see a few 15" totals because of how hard it's snowed for so long.

MDOT operates 85 plows in South west MI and have begun 12 hours shifts to try and keep up with the snow on state trunk lines and highways in southwest MI.

Schools in Chicago and MI announced cancellations ahead of Winter Storm Mateo. More than 200 flights were canceled at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus, Michigan, by early Friday.

Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation Commissioner John Tully said 300 salt-spreading plows hit the streets late Thursday and will continue their work through Friday.
