Women Who Clean A Lot Could Face Decreased Lung Function

Researchers at the University of Bergen, Norway found that women who worked as cleaners, or had regularly used cleaning sprays for 20 years, had decline in their lung function equivalent to if they'd been smoking 20 cigarettes a day over the same period.

The population of 6,230 participants was examined three times over 20 years, as part of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey.

The results showed that women who cleaned their house as little as once a week or as professional cleaners, they had an "accelerated" decline in lung capacity.

The study did find that asthma was more prevalent in women who cleaned at home (12.3%) or at work (13.7%) compared to those who did not clean (9.6%). The scientists have already found out for some years now the magnitude of the negative impact of the cleaning products chemicals on the respiratory system in asthma patients.

However, the same association was not observed in male participants, with the team finding that men who cleaned either at home or at work did not experience any greater decline in FEV1 or FVC than men who did not clean.

Some people just can't be bothered to clean their house - no matter how many times their parents or partners beg them to pick up the hoover, they'd rather live happily in squalor.

They were categorized as "cleaning", "not cleaning", and "occupational cleaning".

FA Cup: Chelsea tame Tigers, land in quarterfinals

United Kingdom experts have now advised that if you keep your windows open and don't use sprays, you'll avoid wrecking your lungs in the long term.

Co-author Oistein Svanes said that the level of impact of cleaning products on the lungs was surprising at first.

The researchers say it is likely the chemicals irritate the lining of the airways, leading to long-term changes in the way they work. You will not need a lot of chemicals after all, when cleaning.

According to the study, women who used the cleaning products regularly had a markedly decreased lung capacity.

They recommend using microfibre cloths and water instead of harsh chemicals for most cleaning purposes.

He added that public health officials should strictly regulate cleaning products and encourage producers to develop cleaning agents that can not be inhaled. "The small particles can travel deep into the lungs and cause infections, and ageing of the lungs", Svanes explains.

Many people often use spray cleaning chemicals when cleaning whether because it is their job or simply for their own homes.
