Aadhaar-identification not mandatory for NEET exam

Justice Chandrachud said even if the court reserved its verdict on 20 March the banks and other institution would have only 10 days left which might be difficult

Justice Chandrachud said even if the court reserved its verdict on 20 March, banks and other institutions would have only 10 days left to implement Aadhaar verification, which might be hard.

The members of the constitutional bench began hearing the petitions questioning the validity of the Aadhaar Act in February.

Although not officially stated, there are indications that the deadline could be extended till May 31 or even beyond as the hearing of the case may go on for another month.

The deadline for linking Aadhaar IDs with PAN cards was initially extended from June 30, 2017, to end August 2017 then December 31, 2017, to finally March 31, 2018.

The statement of the Centre comes a few days after industry body Assocham urged the government to relax the deadline for linking the Aadhaar IDs with bank accounts, especially with public sector banks. "This will have all India ramification as various institutions would have to adjust themselves accordingly", said Divan. The seat at that point called the Attorney General for help with the issue. "If required, we can do it again", Venugopal told a constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra.

Senior advocates Arvind Datar and Vibha Makhija, for petitioners, said it was a "great tragedy" that the authorities continue to violate the court's interim orders.

The Apex court observed that any other proof of identification can be used in place of Aadhar in an appeal against Gujarat's High Court order filed by Abid Ali Patel a resident of Gujarat. He had encouraged the bench to consider giving pay to the people who had endured on the ground of avoidance because of Aadhaar, especially the family of the starvation death casualties. It had said that the Centre came out with the law in 2016 to negate the objection that it was collecting data since 2009 without any authorisation, but the issue which needed consideration was what would happen if the data collected earlier, had been compromised.
