However, the company didn't provide any additional details about the issue, leaving many left in the dark about why their Alexa companion randomly chuckles into the void.

In what sounds like the beginning of an especially creepy episode of Black Mirror, Amazon Echo owners have begun to report that Alexa is laughing at them out of the blue. "I still get chills".

Amazon has responded and said that "we're aware of this and working to fix it".

Some Alexa devices unleashed a cackling laugh without any instruction to do so. One user on Twitter ordered his Alexa to turn his lights off and instead heard a woman laugh.

Some Echo users responded by turning off their devices. However some users are reporting that Alexa is laughing and the giggles happen at odd hours and with no user prompt.

Like the Apple iPhone's Siri, Amazon's Alexa can play music, order groceries, give a weather report, control smart home devices, shop on Amazon, search the internet and set reminders, according to CNET.

A number of users have also left negative reviews on the official Amazon Echo page on the Amazon website, where users can purchase the device.

In short, Alexa has begun to laugh maniacally unprompted and Amazon has no idea why, though they did tell Buzzfeed News they are "working on it". That can be a scary thought when you're home alone and can't quite come to terms with a digital assistant laughing out of the blue for no reason.
