Australian minister issues compulsory airbag recall for 2 in 7 vehicles

- Worldwide, there have been at least 23 deaths and more than 230 serious injuries reported associated with the airbags. Consequently, upon deployment the inflator could rupture explosively, destroying the metal casing surrounding the propellant and spraying shrapnel into the vehicle's passenger cabin.

More than 50 million airbags in more than 37 million vehicles have been recalled to date.

"The safety of all Australians is the highest priority of the Federal Government", Sukkar said.

Rod Sims, chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, the consumer watchdog that recommended the recall, said some manufacturers within the voluntary recall have done a bad job.

About 2.7 million vehicles have been recalled voluntarily, and 1.7 million had their airbags replaced.

The recall will be staggered based on urgency, with vehicles fitted with Alpha airbags - which pose an "immediate and critical safety risk" - to be recalled first.

As at January 2018, the overall replacement rate for all voluntary recalls was only approximately 63% of the total number of affected vehicles in Australia.

In an Australian first, the Government has ordered a compulsory recall of MILLIONS of cars to fix exploding airbags.

The ACCC also recommends subscribing to their email newsletter if you think your vehicle may be at risk, as additional vehicles are yet to be added to the recall list.

The scale of the recall is so big it will be done on a rolling basis, with priority given to replacing airbags posing the most risk.

"Since the announcement of the global Takata airbag recall, Mitsubishi Motors has been working hard to replace all affected airbag inflators".

Another 450,000 airbags that were already replaced with a like-for-like replacement are also part of the compulsory recall.

The assistant minister to the treasurer, Michael Sukkar, announced the recall on Wednesday morning.

He added that the government prioritises all Australian's safety.

Generally speaking, under this compulsory recall, a supplier is the company who manufactured the vehicle and a dealer is where you bought it.

Volkswagen, which has around 100,000 cars that may be subject to mandatory action, is among a group of carmakers which previously resisted calls to replace Takata airbag components.

"All must be replaced by the end of 2020", he said.

"It is an indictment, quite frankly, on this government that they have taken so long to pull the trigger on a compulsory recall", he said.

Last year, Honda was pleading with owners to have their cars fixed using traditional and non-traditional methods, including letters, text messages, advertisements and a protracted social-media campaign.
