Claire Foy made less money than Matt Smith on 'The Crown'

Matt Smith and Claire Foy star in Netflix's 'The Crown.'

Next season they will be replaced with new actors.

Foy, however, will not be reprising her role as Queen Elizabeth. Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth had more screen time than Matt Smith as Prince Philip, yet Smith was still paid more.

However, in an interview with producers Andy Harries and Suzanne Mackie, it was revealed that Foy earned less than Smith during the course of the two seasons of The Crown.

"The producers acknowledged that [Smith] did make more due to his Doctor Who fame, but that they would rectify that for the future", Variety reported.

Ms. Foy was reportedly paid $40,000 per episode, according to Variety, out of the show's hefty budget, which is upward of $7 million per episode.

During an INTV conference panel on Tuesday, producers of Netflix's The Crown admitted that series lead Claire Foy was paid less than Matt Smith, the Prince Phillip to her Queen Elizabeth II. For the next two seasons, all the roles will be recast with older actors. Helena Bonham Carter will replace Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret, the Queen's rebellious younger sister. "The Crown" has had 10 episodes per season. "I'm lucky I discovered acting as a way of expressing myself, but unless you're given the permission to do that, you can't get it out", she said.

"Seasons 3 and 4 will be the test of whether the show really has the legs to survive", said Harries. "It's daunting but exciting and I hope it'll keep the series fresh and really of interest to people". Since departing The Crown, Foy has signed on to star as Lisbeth Salander, the world-class computer hacker and heroine of Stieg Larsson's Millennium series, in the upcoming franchise spin-off The Girl in the Spider's Web.

Earlier this year actress Michelle Williams was paid a fraction of what her All The Money In The World co-star Mark Wahlberg earned for the movie's reshoots.
