Colin Firth and wife Livia briefly split after 18 years of marriage

"Through a statement from his lawyers, Brancaccia has denied engaging in such behavior, claiming he 'has absolutely nothing to do with the events described, '" Newsweek reports.

Here's what's going down: Giuggioli, who's been married to Firth for more than 20 years, has been privately dealing with an alleged stalker.

Firth and Giuggiolo released a joint statement that confirmed Giuggiolo's once secret relationship and revealed that Firth and Giuggiolo were not actually together during that time.

Brancaccia, 55, is an Italian journalist with a position at ANSA Italian News Agency on its International News Desk. The Firths said that they "never had any desire to make this matter public", and that it had only come to the attention of the media due to leaked court documents. During that time Livia briefly became involved with former friend Mr. Brancaccia.

The statement by the couple continued saying "The reporting this week on this case is understood to be the outcome of a leaked court document. As a outcome of his stalking, threats and refusal to desist, the legal complaint was lodged with the Italian authorities".

"This is greatly to be regretted", said the statement.

However, Marco - who was a family friend of the Firths - has denied that he was stalking the Italian film producer and has she claimed wanted to leave the 57-year-old actress for good to embark on a relationship with him.

In a statement to The Times, the couple's spokesman admitted the affair, but said that it had occurred while they were briefly separated, and that Brancaccia harassed her after the fling ended.

The couple is based in London, but the Firths also have a home in Umbria, Italy. "My 'stalking" consisted of two messages via WhatsApp after she ended our relationship in June 2016, and an email. He further claims, "In a year she sent me hundreds of messages of love, photos and videos, even a diary". That prompted Firth to complain to Italian prosecutors, who have begun an investigation and seized Mr Brancaccia's computer and phone. Brancaccia says he sent an email to Firth revealing the affair and Giuggioli, afraid of Brancaccia going public with information about her marriage, made the accusations against him.
